“Photography is the expression of a desire not to be alone either behind or in front of the camera."
I’m Danny Van der Elst, a Belgian photographer who has spent the past 15 years distilling the human essence into light and shadow. I work almost monastically: natural light, minimal gear, no makeup. By stripping away everything non-essential, the body becomes a canvas for emotion; beauty and vulnerability meet in each frame.
My current focus is UNFOLD—a series of guided portrait sessions that transform self-doubt into self-acceptance. In a quiet, safe space people drop the performance, reveal who they truly are, and leave with images that whisper, “You are already enough.” UNFOLD builds on the same visual language that underpins my artistic projects (including Blooming Into Healing) but shifts the spotlight onto personal empowerment.
Each collaboration is a journey: sitter, photographer, and light in silent conversation. I’m grateful to every person who has trusted me; their openness is the real substance of the work.
I welcome dialogue with curators, galleries, and art-lovers interested in raw portraiture that blurs the line between documentary, fine art, and gentle activism. Let’s explore how these portraits—and the stories behind them—can inhabit new spaces and spark wider conversations about body, identity, and belonging.
