i work in gestural abstraction, using layered color and mark-making to build non-representational space.
I am a painter based in Lisbon working primarily in abstraction. My practice focuses on large-scale canvases built through layered acrylic and oil pastels where gestural marks, scraped surfaces, and saturated color fields interact. The work is non-representational: I am not depicting objects or scenes, but constructing visual space through color relationships and physical action.
The process is central to the work. Each painting starts without a fixed outcome. I apply paint, then respond to what happens on the canvas by adding, removing, or obscuring. Line cuts through color fields. Areas of density are set against open space. I keep reworking the surface until the composition reaches a point of tension that feels resolved. It’s a physical, editing-driven process where decisions are visible in the final surface.
What drives the work is the problem of balance. I’m interested in how chaos and structure can exist in the same space without one canceling the other. Color is the main tool for this — how far I can push chromatic intensity before the painting collapses, and how to hold it together through mark-making and composition. The goal isn’t expression for its own sake. It’s to make a painting that has its own internal logic and holds up under sustained looking.
