About me
His work explores the relationship between place, memory and atmosphere, using landscape, seascape, and urban environments as starting points for emotional and visual responses.
While grounded in observation, his paintings are not literal representations of specific locations. Instead, they seek to capture the mood, energy, and impressions left by an experience.
“Escapism” is a present line of enquiry for a series of works. Escapism is a mental diversion from the harsh realities of daily life with the intent of prompting the viewers’ imagination.
Direct engagement with the environment inform his practice. He is drawn to shifting qualities of light, weather, and perspective, and the way these can transform ordinary scenes into something more evocative. These observations form the basis of a studio process built on intuition, experimentation, and reflection. He contemplates, sketches and conveys his spontaneous emotions to sketchbooks.
Reduced and condensed, the sketches play onto the canvas with brushes and instruments, he finds along the coast.
He builds surfaces through layers of colour, texture, and expressive mark-making. A limited palette creates focus, while variations in tone, movement, and structure guide composition. The process is exploratory, with each painting developing through a balance of control and spontaneity. Gestural brushwork, unconventional tools, and the physical nature of paint all contribute to depth and tension.
Cued by the aesthetic of his surroundings, he paints a patch work of visual impressions and emotions. A theatre of movement plays out in expressionist panoramas.
His work meets the viewer with visceral prompts. A pareidolia experience is created, causing viewers to interpret familiar random forms or patterns of light and shadow, as images. Water, cliffs, buildings and landscapes might appear.
