About me

Linda Burris Webster is a photographer whose work explores the ways social, political, and environmental forces shape individual lives. Drawing inspiration from extensive travel, years of living abroad, and ongoing research, she creates images that encourage reflection on contemporary global issues and the people affected by them.
In her ongoing series Cartographica, maps become both material and metaphor. Webster seeks to draw attention to individual human lives—lives that are invisible when we look at a map. Beginning with countries facing challenges such as environmental destruction, human rights violations, gender inequality, political upheaval, and conflict, she tears, twists, cuts, folds, and reshapes maps into sculptural forms. She then photographs these sculptures, transforming a two-dimensional map into a three-dimensional object before returning it to a photographic image. Through this process, geography is reimagined as a vehicle for exploring the human stories that often remain hidden behind political boundaries, headlines, and statistics.
