About me

I am Mala Ramcharan, internationally known as The Woman of Barcode & QR Code Art. For over 30 years, I have developed a unique artistic signature in which lines tell stories filled with humor, emotion, social awareness, and meaning.

Born in Suriname and raised in the Netherlands, my work is inspired by observation, human connection, and everyday life. Before becoming a full-time artist, I worked at Delft University of Technology, Philips, and spent more than 30 years in secondary education. These experiences deepened my fascination with human behavior and the diversity of society.
Around 1995, I discovered the artistic potential of the barcode, later expanding my work with QR codes. Today, I am recognized as a pioneer in Barcode & QR Code Art, transforming these everyday symbols into thought-provoking visual narratives.

My work explores themes such as AI, science, inclusion, climate change, history, and contemporary culture. I believe art can inspire dialogue, create social awareness, and connect people across cultures.
Alongside my artistic career, I founded the Shoe Project, supporting underprivileged children through creativity.

I am a Certified Professional Artist and Signature Artist of IWS USA, with internationally exhibited and award-winning work.
