Art is a bridge between matter and spirit. It refreshes perception and unites opposites, making spiritual experience possible through the sensual curiosity that art awakens.
The foundation of my painting practice is silence and calm.
Creation emerges from contemplation – a sensual observation of reality, where images arise as a play between imagination and what is seen. This state allows visions to take shape and transform into paintings – autonomous entities, recordings of an inner metamorphosis.
Art, for me, is a metaphor (from the Greek meta – beyond, and pherein – to carry), a bridge between material and spiritual experience. It enables a shift beyond a dualistic view of the world. Through sensual perception, which art both deepens and refreshes, a spiritual experience becomes possible.
The language of my painting is one of signs and symbols, color, light and darkness.
I create a personal visual system of communication – a pictorial code that can be deciphered without the need for verbal explanation. I draw on cosmogonies, philosophy, and religion, expressing my personal experience of the world. The non-representational language of abstraction hints at themes of impermanence, life, and death.
In the chaos of stimuli, I search for those that hold my attention and awaken the need for contemplation. My painting is a form of meditation – I think in images, not in words. I seek to merge a lyrical experience of the world with geometric abstraction, drawing on various philosophical and spiritual traditions.
I am drawn to an alchemical and shamanic approach to creation – one that unites matter and spirit. As Paul Klee wrote: “Art is always a metaphor for the cosmos.”
