“I act on instinct, moving through a continual process of discovery.”
Drawing is at the center of his mental process, serving as an indispensable daily practice that shapes his ideas and reflects his creative thinking. It is not only a necessity, but also a tool for research and study, playing a crucial role in the development of his three-dimensional works. Throughout his artistic journey, drawing has intersected with other forms of expression, such as sculpture and public space interventions, often in collaboration with architectural thought.
Meireles de Pinho views his work as that of an archaeologist in reverse: while the archaeologist uncovers by removing, he adds layers, creating to reveal new meanings. His sculptures are frequently connected to the place and space in which they are situated, engaging in a dialogue with the collective memories and histories of those environments. These memories and stories serve as ongoing sources of inspiration, grounding and informing his work within the context it is created, ultimately reinforcing the profound relationship between art, space, and memory.
