Making contemporary art more accessible to the world and more sustainable for South African artists.
Palesa Suthane is a self-taught, Johannesburg-based art curator and founder of Grand Arts Society, a platform dedicated to advancing contemporary African art through curatorial practice, collections management, and cultural strategy. With over a decade of experience in the arts sector, her work centers on creating meaningful dialogue between artists, institutions, and audiences while expanding access to visual culture.
Her curatorial approach is rooted in storytelling, often exploring themes of memory, trauma, healing, and social consciousness within the African context. She is particularly interested in how art can function as both archive and intervention, addressing issues such as gender-based violence, identity formation, and collective disassociation in contemporary society.
Palesa has collaborated with a range of artists and organizations, positioning herself as both a cultural mediator and a strategic thinker. Through Grand Arts Society, she continues to develop innovative projects that merge exhibition-making with media, research, and emerging digital platforms.
