I transform my photos beyond recognition and create generative images by algorithms. My works explore tension between abstraction and meaning, chance and control, inviting individual interpretation.
A photographer and contemporary artist born and residing in Warsaw, Poland. Self-taught, with no formal artistic education.
As a child, I was good at drawing and math, but I didn’t grow up in an environment of artists or scientists. In the reality of communist Poland, drawing gradually gave way to pragmatic choices.
Since childhood, I have struggled with impaired hand-eye coordination. The line I draw trembles against my will. This made it all the easier for me to forget that part of myself.
I returned to the art world years later, working as a data analyst. I discovered butoh dance theater and performance art, but an accident prevented me from continuing my physical practice. I began documenting my friends’ artistic activities by photographing dance theaters.
Working with photography and image-editing software led me to experiment with abstraction. I use algorithm-based tools, which allow me to combine mathematical thinking with visual sensitivity by designing my own algorithms.
Drawing has returned to my process as a sketch and as the final stage of refining an image.
