The title is in reference to the plucking of innocence women experience as they mature. They are convinced that, in a sense, the choice is never truly theirs, but depends on the act of being chosen. That their value is dually determined by their sex appeal and submissiveness. The woman in the painting fixes her fingers on a white rose, doing the "plucking" herself this time. Thus, breaking free from the cycle and taking her body and heart back into her own hands.
