Esther Vörösmarty

I am a Vienna born artist studying art and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the class of Professor Yair Martin Guttmann and have been working as a visual artist for many years. In my early exhibitions, I have already fused sculpture installations, performances, and videos into idiosyncratic, unsettling art that not infrequently addresses physicality and gender. My metaphorical universes depict these moments as a state of pure transformation. Looking beyond biology to explore the inventiveness of form, using narrative models from other fields such as biography, lore, or geology to create a hypenalized and scatological vision of life and death are themes I enjoy exploring. Harnessing the constructed and natural limits of the body and physical dynamics that constantly oscillate between disciplined self-mastery and energetic drive is a story I want to tell. My practice includes textiles, photography, video, sculpture, performance and exhibition design. It is an examination of how the social and mental spaces of the modern subject are constructed through a detailed analysis of the cultural past and the physical environment that surrounds us. The surreal, alienating stagings in the films and photographs overlap with history, memories, and symbols to create a complex cosmology. As a visual artist, I am interested in expanding the concept of sculpture to include almost all visual media, combining performance, photography, sculpture and installation to create a fascinating synthesis of the arts. The realization of body structures and their dialogue with spatial (de)constructions in the process of photography plays an essential role. These installations make unrestrained reference to contemporary as well as historical events or philosophical themes such as transformation and transcendence. They assemble into unbridled sequences of images and address questions of identity and human existence.
