Mariam Hisham

Curator

Mariam Abdelrahman was born in Cairo, Egypt and raised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Currently she is studying BA Media and Culture at the University of Amsterdam. “My deep-seated goal, as an art curator, is to challenge the prevailing negative stereotypes of Middle Easterners that have permeated the global narrative for various decades now. In the global discourse, the Middle Eastern identity has essentially been distorted, to perpetuate harmful stereotypes, thereby erasing the dynamic complexity of the region’s history, culture, and contributions to mankind. Driven by my Middle Eastern heritage, “Turath” in Arabic, I hope to subvert these misconceptions, unravel the truths hidden behind layers of misinformation, and create an exhibition that highlights the intricate tapestry of my own cultural background.” By presenting the beauty and richness of the Middle Eastern identity, Mariam seeks to honor her heritage, and foster connection, mutual respect, and empathy, in the global discourse.
