ARTober in London: Our Guide to a Truly Demure Autumn

The quietness of the summer season has come to an end, but following the quiet comes the storm, and the electricity in the artworld of London is enough to make your hair stand up! Art fairs,  talks, solo  exhibitions, and meets and greets with acclaimed artists and curators will be there to accompany you in your art journey throughout the month of October. Starting from the seasonal exhibits of decorative antiques and textile, and concluding with an immersive week devoted to the discovery and understanding of Asian art – London offers many places where one could sojourn, and would not regret it!

If you are in London in the first week of October, you certainly should not miss the opportunity to get familiarized with antiques and interior design objects from modern and contemporary epochs at The Decorative Art Fair!

On that note, the Autumn edition of The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair takes place from the 1st to the 6th of October at Evolution London (The Marquee) in Battersea Park. Celebrated worldwide, this fair is a must-visit destination for design connoisseurs, collectors and interior enthusiasts alike.During exhibiting days, you can immerse yourself in a curated selection of heritage craftsmanship from over 130 specialist dealers, offering an exciting array of traditional and decorative antiques, modernist 20th-century design pieces, and interior accessories that span from the 1700s to the 1970s. Art enthusiasts will certainly appreciate that the fair features Classical to Contemporary paintings, prints, photography and sculpture.

Visitors hours: Tuesday 1st October 12pm-8pm; Wednesday 2nd October 11am-8pm; Thursday 3rd October 11am-8pm; Friday 4th October 11am-7pm; Saturday 5 October 11am-7pm; Sunday 6th October 11am-6pm.

The most eventful period, however, is the second week of October. Not only will you be able to visit some of the most renowned Art Fairs, but you will also be given the opportunity to participate in networking events and get acquainted with artists, curators and experts on visual arts.

StArt 

Since its founding in 2014, StArt has offered guidance to artists approaching the vast world of the arts for the first time in their careers. With respect to the fair taking place this October from the 7th to the 13th, StArt will bring together cutting edge artists and galleries from across the world, introducing the cultural leaders shaping a new dawn in contemporary markets. 

It is necessary to mention also that StART has relocated to an iconic new space in the creative and technology hub, King’s Cross St Pancras and will feature leading and emerging artists, curated spaces and galleries with diverse works spanning painting, photography, and more.

Visitors hours: from Monday 7th October to Saturday 12th October 11 am-8pm; Sunday 13th October 11am-5pm.

Minor Attractions

A worthwhile event to experience, is an art fair located within a hotel. The Mandrake hotel will be hosting this fair from October 8th through the 13th. Beginning on the ground floor, as one enters into the lobby they can begin to be enveloped by artworks from some of the 45 participating galleries. The experience does not end there though, there are an additional eight rooms in the hotel’s upper floors that also add to the collaborative efforts of both the exhibitors and the hotel itself that can be seen throughout.Finally, an underground room will act as a screening room during the day and a nightclub in the evenings.

PAD London

Taking place from the 8th to the 13th of October at Berkeley Square, PAD London is dedicated to 20th century and contemporary Design. Throughout the years PAD fairs have gained notoriety for being a space where connoisseurship, exquisite taste and curatorial flair is expressed by showcasing the very best in modern and contemporary and historical design from the world’s leading galleries.

Visit hours: Tuesday 8th October -Saturday 12th October from 11am to 8pm; Sunday 13th October from 11am to 6pm.

 

Women in art fair

Taking place between October 9 and 12 at the Mall Galleries of London, Women in art fair is an initiative devoted to redressing the gender imbalance within the art industry. According to the members of this organization, owning a place within the vibrant artistic scene in London represents “a powerful step towards dismantling systemic barriers and promoting a more just and representative art community." 

With respect to the exhibit programme, Women in art fair will present talks from acclaimed art figures playing pivotal roles within contemporary societies, namely Caroline lang, Gemma Rolls-Bentley, Carrie Scott, Aparajita Jain, Ashima Kumar

Visitors hours: (Preview) Tuesday 9th October from 11am to 1pm and 6pm to 9pm; (talks) Wednesday 9th October at 2pm; Thursday 10th October at 5pm; Friday 11th October at 11am and 2pm; Saturday 12th October 11.30am.

Frieze London and Frieze Masters 

The two fairs fall among the world’s most influential contemporary art fairs, focusing primarily on contemporary art and living artists, and take place from the 9th to the 13th of October in The Regent’s Park. Although Frieze London is mainly devoted to contemporary art, it does establish a dialogue with works and movements existing before the 2000s thanks to its links with Frieze Master. Indeed, while the former presents works created mainly post-2000 - exhibiting emerging artists working today-,  the latter gives a unique view on the relationship between historical art and contemporary practice. 

Visit hours: 8 -12 October, 11am – 8pm, with a closing day on 13 October from 11am – 6pm.

 

1 54 London

1 54 London is the leading global art fair committed to promoting contemporary art originating from Africa. Taking place from the 10th to the 13th of October at Somerset House, the fair features leading international galleries specializing in contemporary African art alongside artists talks, panel discussions and a Special Projects programme.

Additionally, more than 60 galleries have been selected to showcase the varied body of work by established and emerging artists from African diasporas worldwide.

Visitors hours: (Preview)  Thursday 10th October 11am-7pm; (Public) Friday 11th October -Sunday 13th October  11am-6/7pm.

The Other Art Fair 

Taking place between the 10th and 13th of October at the Truman Brewery, The Other Art Fair will showcase an immersive exhibition uniting artworks, installations, performances and Dj sets to provide a friendly and captivating atmosphere.

Visitors hours: (Opening Night) Thursday 10th October  5pm-10pm; Friday 11th October 1pm-9pm; Saturday 12th October 11am-7pm; Sunday 13th October 11am-6pm.

If you are not in London during the first two weeks of October, don't worry! The last days of the month, as well as early November, offer cross-cultural performances and gatherings taking place in the heart of the British capital. That said, have a safe trip and enjoy!

Affordable Art Fair

Taking place from the 16th to the 20th of October at Battersea Park, the Affordable Art fair will showcase contemporary artworks from 100 leading galleries worldwide. Curated exhibitions, tours, talks, workshops will bring the audience together – families included. Family Morning during weekend-days promises to be packed with fun and creative activities for all family members, including the young, while after-hour activities are said to be more suited for the adult audience of the event. 

Visitors hours: (Vip Preview) Wednesday 16th October 5pm-9pm, (Public Openings) Thursday 17th and Friday 18th October  11am-9pm, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th October 10am-6pm.

Asian Art in London 

Taking place within October 30 and November 4 in Central London, the Asian Art fair offers an intensive programme of specialized exhibitions, auctions, symposiums, performances, gallery talks, openings, lectures, short courses promoting a more critical understanding and appreciation of Asian craftsmanship and culture. 

Late night openings: Saturday 2nd November in Kensington Church Street, Sunday 3rd November in St James’s, and Monday 4th November in Mayfair.
